Culture

As one of Italy’s most beautiful Borgo’s, Suvereto is an architectural and historical masterpiece. Medieval villages dot the Tuscan landscape but Suvereto is notable due to its events, culture and vibrant community. The story of how Suvreto became a medieval time-capsule, dates back to the 17th century. Resulting from poor irrigation, the region became a marshy breeding ground for mosquitoes and disease. The town was suddenly abandoned. During the rule of Napoleon and his sister Elisa, the Maremma region was re-irrigated and emerged as a fertile and prosperous agricultural zone. Suvereto remained perfectly preserved and celebrated to this day.

A unique race taking place twice a year, celebrating the region’s medieval past along with its rich wine culture. Two person teams of “pushers”, compete against rival towns through Suvereto’s historic centre. Challengers push wine barrels up and down the cobble-stone hills in an exhilarating race for glory and bragging rights.
